Kitchen accidents can really put a damper on a celebratory mood during the holidays. Here are some tips to keep you safe while preparing your family’s next culinary memory.

  1. 1 The day before your big family feast, make sure your oven is clean and is in good working order. You can clean the oven with a tough degreaser such as EasyOff. Check for loose valves, faulty connections, or rust.
  2. Test your home’s smoke detectors to make sure they are in good working order.
  3. Always use well-insulated potholders and oven mitts when handling hot pots and pans. Only use these mitts and potholders if they are dry. If your oven gloves or mitts are wet, they will conduct heat more intensely and can cause steam burns on your hands.
  4. We have no doubt that your food smells excellent, but please be careful when opening your oven door as the steam that escapes could burn your face.
  5. Lastly, check Recalls.gov to make sure that your oven, stove, or cooking appliance have been recently recalled to avoid using a defective product that could lead to injury.
